History of Pole Dancing

There are some theories supporting the idea that pole dancing comes from tribal dancing in Africa, where a woman would dance with a wooden pole for her future husband to demonstrate the type of lovemaking she desired. Another possible origin of pole dancing is from Europe’s Middle Ages. Such as the dancing in Africa, a wooden pole was used by women to entice men.

Pole Dancing Types

Pole dancing could be traced back at least eight hundred years. Mallakhamb is a traditional Indian sport for men, that utilizes principles of endurance and strength using a wooden pole, wider in diameter than the usual modern standard pole, that has a large wooden ball at the top. Chinese pole, originating in India, also has a male dominated background, using two poles, on which men would perform “gravity defying tricks” while they leapt from pole to pole, at approximately twenty feet in the air.

Today’s pole dancing craze is considered to have started in Canada in the 1980′s in exotic table dancing and lap nightclubs. Fawnia Mondey, originally from Canada, is the first pole dancing champions. Through the 1990′s Fawnia began coaching pole dancing to every day women. She produced the 1st educational pole dancing DVD.

Pole Dancing In The World

Pole dancing quickly spread on the United States followed by the rest of the planet, helped by multi corporations for example Spearmint Rhino. Pole dancing is recognized around the world including Europe, Australia and also areas of China.Pole dancing as you may know it today involves dance around a vertical pole. The old ancient striptease became a forerunner to the modern updated variation. Pole dancing provides a display of acrobatics and strength, combined with a combination of sensual, flowing, feminine dance movements to form the art of pole dancing we now know and recognize.

The modern type of pole dancing has only been documented since the 1980′s, but the origins appear to go back several years prior to this. Only in recent years has pole dancing become a little more acceptable. The stigma mounted on this art generally is one of reasons why the dance have little history documented and appears to have been underground for quite some time.
